Collagraphs are printed from plates made of collaged imagery. I use matboard as a base. It can be cut into for linear elements, plus paper, fabric or other items can be glued on to add texture. The entire plate is sealed to protect it from the ink and solvents.
I use an intaglio inking method for collagraph. Oil-based ink is forced into the low areas of the plate, and the top surface is wiped clean. At this time, any areas that will have chine collé added during printing are prepared. The rice paper is completely adhered to the base paper as the image is run through the press.
The finished, inked plate is passed through an etching press with a sheet of dampened paper to transfer the image. Some images may have additional color added with watercolor after printing.
